A favorite behavior of Acmon Blue (Plebejus acmon) is to come to mud, especially males (Brock and Kaufman 2003). +Marcella Bittencourt asked recently why so many of my photos are of butterflies on rocks and soil instead of flowers. Great question! It is because butterflies require salt for optimal movement and egg production. Salts can be taken up at wet areas of soil or sand. Fire pits and dung are also sources. Boggs and Jackson (1991) tease out the particulars of this behavior (https://goo.gl/c1qbuC).
